Essential Baby Registry Checklist

So your baby is coming and you need to get everything together before the big day. What to put on your baby’s registry list? What not to buy? (This post has affiliate links in it, so you can make a little money if you click the links.) The baby registry is a great way to save money on gifts for new parents, but it is also a great way to find the best gifts for your friends and family who know your newborns (and who wouldn’t! ).

Crib bedding sets are at the top of the essential baby registry checklist. These are almost always the most expensive gifts you will order, so you want to be sure you’ve ordered enough crib sets to go around. A large family with older kids who all need cribs can end up spending quite a bit on crib sets over just one year. Keep this in mind when ordering sets; too many crib sets can overwhelm a budget and make finding crib bedding that much more expensive. There is one exception to this: if you know your soon-to-be mom well, you may be able to get a deal on an extra crib set or two as part of a group of purchases. Just make sure that if you do this you have ordered enough crib sets to go around, and remember to allow plenty of time for delivery and installation.

Another essential baby registry checklist is the clothing selection. This is pretty much a given. However, clothes selection can be an exception to the general rule. If you know your soon-to-be mother’s taste in fashion, you may not want to spend a lot on individual pieces. That said, if your friends are big fashion fans and your soon-to-be mom adores high-fashion designers, it might be worth the investment to include a few outfit selections from her favorite designers in the nursery.

Finally, one essential baby registry checklist must include diapers. Unless you plan to change your newborn’s diapers more than several months into their life, there is no way to go wrong with a supply of brand new diapers. While the cost will be higher than that of individual purchases, the difference will be well worth the price. If you decide to purchase diapers for your infant and your child, you should order in bulk quantity to ensure delivery and installation. This is particularly important if you live in an area where there is a short supply of diapers for newborns.

And finally, the most important, but often overlooked on the essential baby registry checklist is the shower gift. While it’s certainly very nice to receive gifts from others, especially during the holidays, when you’re expecting your first child you don’t want to fill your new family member’s day with gifts. Instead, make a list of only a few high quality, meaningful gifts that you know your newborn will enjoy. A good pair of cotton pajamas, some swaddling blankets, a cute baby bathtub, and a few quality toys are all good gifts that will provide extra happiness for months to come.

There are many other essential items, including clothes, blankets, crib, and more, but these three items will make for a wonderful start to the new year. As the new year approaches, consider making a minimalist baby registry list that only includes necessities. If you have any items on your list that you know your child will get a gift for, then skip over those items. That way, you can focus on adding more of the essential items to your list!
